Madurai airport is finally getting in shape
After years of lying staid & proposals on paper, Madurai airport renovation is slowly nearing completion.

Official line is that new facilities will be ready by March 2010, but in reality, it may take couple of more months. With these new facilities the much awaited international flight services are expected to be started soon.
Going by the stats given in AAI, (http://www.aai.aero/traffic_news/aug2k9annex3.pdf) Madurai Airport handles about 30,000 passsengers per month. On the number of passengers, it stands 11th among domestic airports. Guess the figures were high during October (Deepavali time). Ticket rates went as high as Rs.11,000 during Deepavali season.
The regular flow as in August can easily cross 50K mark once flights to Singapore, Kualalumpur & Dubai starts from Madurai.

I would like to submit few words to your kindness and airport auhtority that, me and so many my firneds are from around Madurai, Madurai District, Ramanad District, Sivaganga Districts, Virdunagar District eager to start International flight from Dubai. If the flight will start defintely

family also geting 30 days leave per year. If direct flight will operate we are saving our one
day (one day loss if coming thru Madras or Trichy airport) and enjoy with our family members

I hope Madurai will become an international airport by end of this year 2010. I can understand Sundarajulu’s feelings of wasting their 1 day of holiday in just travel.
A lot of people will be using Madurai Airport than Tiruchi. I am sure, business people from South TN will push this to happen the earlier.

It’s March 2010 now. Now official line is that it will be ready by June 2010.

i and my friends of plenty are working in Muscat, Oman having native place in and around madurai , are wasting lot of time to reach Madurai due to connection flights,bus journey etc.
we would be more previlaged, if we get atleast 3 flights a week from Muscat – IXM – Muscat and hope this time,lot of requests would have approached you asking the same facility.

We also from USA waiting for the airport. It will save us one day and we already spend 2 days in flights to reach India. After that we will definitely take connect flights starting from Madurai. so it will increase the passengers for Madurai airport.
heard from the news, that the new international standard terminal is opening on sep 11th 2010.
but the news is from the secretary of Nationalist Congress, [the party of Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr. Praful Patel] and still not from state or central govt..
hope thats true and holds[ without any issues of political leader's wish of opening the terminal at election time to gain any favors].. and looking forward for the first international flight to depart/land on the new runway
Yes, it will be glad news. SpiceJet is launching services to & from Madurai on Sep 11th, 2010 to Chennai (and onwards to Mumbai & Delhi). If this service launch is coincide with opening of new terminal, it will be fine.

I’m from Dubai. We are also waiting for the wonderful day of the opening ceremony for the Madurai International Airport. Everytime, we, Gulf Residents are suffering lot & lot while comming from Dubai, via, chennai. Sometimes, the Domestic Airways, like, Paramount Airways cancelling their service at the last minute, which made a big headache to me on April’ 2010 and travelled by Bus, which tooks 10 Hrs, wasting of one Full day.

Interesting! Thanks for the link. However, that news comes from Madurai Chamber of Commerce Senior President. We can be more certain if an appropriate Airport Official or Civil Aviation Ministry is confirming.
