Vadapanji IT Park developments

Viggie wrote under Infrastructure

Apart from Elanthaikulam, a second & more prominent IT park is coming up at Vadapalanji near Madurai Kamraj University. It is also built by ELCOT on the area of 240 acres. HCL, Satyam, Sutherland, Syntel & others have received allotted land in this park. More details on the official site page of Madurai IT Park SEZ 2.

The IT park is along Madurai – Theni NH49 Extn. and have to cross Madurai – Bodi Metre Gauge railway track to reach the park. A proposal to build an overbridge across this railway track (to be converted to broad gauge soon) is under consideration.

Elanthaikulam IT park developments

Viggie wrote under Infrastructure

Two SEZ IT parks are being actively developed ELCOT in Madurai.  The first one is about 29 acres plot on the ring road near madurai airport at Elanthaikulam Village.

According to ELCOT official website on Madurai IT park 1, plots were already allotted for three companies, Honeywell, HCL & Tessolve services.  Not much activity visible at the site.  A view of this site a month back as shown in Skyscraper forum.

how many people riding on a 2-wheeler?

Viggie wrote under Madurai Lifestyle

I couldn’t resist posting this link. Even though the pictures were taken in Chennai, the situations were too similar to our city. I take it for granted to see whole families on a motorcycle in city roads. I have also carried kids like this.

This blog post was made in 2006 but very much contemporary. Have a look at wonderful 5-part series by Basia.

Gutsy wind on friday

Viggie wrote under Infrastructure,Madurai - General

Last friday was just a usual hot summer dog day. But suddenly there were clouds and had ‘Alankatti’ (ice rain) rain in the evening coupled with gutsy winds. It lasted for about 2 hours, uprooting trees and twigs on most part of the city. The Sholavandan road which is notable for shaded trees had many trees falling & disrupting power lines.

But the most unexpected thing is the crashing down of fifth Platform roof on railway junction. It’s a new shelter on right end. I visited the fifth platform just the day before to see off a relative. The new roof was on the extended platform which is exposed to strong side winds.  But still it’s a wonder that new one crashes while the older ones are intact.

Ellis nagar bridge partly opened

Viggie wrote under Infrastructure

Much to the relief of Maduraiites, the bridge from Periyar bus stand to Railway station west entry is opened. It’s wider than the old bridge and eases the traffic to a great extent.

The other half from Periyar bus stand to Ellis Nagar is still under construction. Once completed, it will be a 4 track bridge and relives congestion on western side.

Stone walled medians

Viggie wrote under Infrastructure

As Chennai, Erode and other corporations go for stone walled 3 feet medians on arterial roads, Madurai too is starting to build such medians on Alagarkoil road (at Goripalayam).

These are nice looking barriers, but unlike other cities, sand started collecting at the edge of the road closer to stone wall.  As the foreign lady once observed, ‘Madurai roads disappearing into dirt on either side’.
