In this city, full day power cuts 9am to 5pm (or 9am to 3pm in a few cases) on Saturdays is getting regular. Each saturday almost half of the city goes without electricity. So each part of the city regularly undergo full day power cut twice a month.
It is officially declared as ”maintenance work” and announced in newspapers. But we are at a loss to understand why the EB should cut power for maintenance work, especially since the same EB is able to maintain their network without full day power cuts in Chennai.
Is Madurai economy too small to provide alternatives??

The proposed NH from Trichy to Tuticorin via Madurai is completed between Madurai & Tuticorin. But before converting the existing Madurai – Trichy route as highway, the proposal was changed for better.
A 4 track highway is being executed between Madurai and Trichy. The good news is most part of the route between Madurai and Melur will be completely new!. The existing Madurai – Melur (30 kms) stretch is well known for continuous turns and a notorius blind narrow turn at Therkku theru village. Accidents in this stretch is almost a daily occurence. This will certainly be one big relief.
The new track between Melur – Madurai ends at the existing ring road. This road is expected to be operation in 2007.

More trains start or arrive/depart from Madurai between 7pm – 10pm every day. The railway authorities decided to upgrade Koodal Nagar station (now used as Goods yard) as a train originating station. Platforms were lengthened and shelters are being put up.
Atleast 1 train is proposed to start from this station. Approach routes to reach Koodal Nagar from Northen part of Madurai were being planned.
Already we have 3 mofussil bus stands and with 2 train originating stations, Madurai may seem big on paper. But for a city with a boundary of just 5 kms from City centre, this seems too much!
